原籍廣東南海西樵,生於東莞,遷香港,幼愛繪事,及長,成為職業畫家。
中國畫啟蒙師為嶺南古琴家盧家炳先生,1956年自美術學校畢業後,隨伍步雲先生研習油畫,並善水彩、粉彩及攝影。先後隨楊善深老師、呂壽琨先生研習中國 繪畫;與畫友發起組織「一畫會」及「春風畫會」。現為「一畫會」會長,曾為春風畫會會長(1970-2000年)及香港藝術館名譽顧問〈推 廣〉(1995-1999年)。96年推動弟子組成「傳藝學會」。
1956年入選「中國華南青年美術展」,1962年舉辦七人油畫展,後曾多次入選市政局主辦之「當代香港藝術雙年展」及「中國全國美術作品展」,78年新 加坡國家博物館及南洋大學「一畫會作品展」,79年台北國立歷史博物館,80年香港藝術館主辦「山水新意境」,85年的「水墨的年代」,87年展於香港、 中國及韓國的「東方水墨聯展」、日本東京都美術館之「亞細亞現代美術展」,88年英國舉行之香港畫家作品展,93、94年香港、廣州、黑龍江等地展出「九 七香港美術家作品聯展」,加拿大卑斯大學、多倫多中國美術會,四次個展及歷屆「春風畫展」、「一畫會」會展等。
作品為香港藝術館、新加坡博物館、新加坡南洋大學、中國人民政治協商會議廣東省委員會、美國銀行及私人收藏家收藏。
自七十年代初起,己歷任香港大一設計學院、正形設計學院、香港中文大學校外進修部等導師。自60年代設畫室授徒,92年創辦傳藝畫院。
出版有:「筆意墨象」及「陳棪文畫選」。
Chan Yim-man was born in Guangdong. After graduating from art school, he has been concentrated his art on oil painting, water colour, pastel and photography for a long period of time.
Famous Chinese classical music master Mr. Lo Ka-ping initiate him in Chinese Art while he was still a young boy; and while his oil painting techniques was taught by Mr. Ng Bo-wen in much later years. In 1969, he became a student of two famous masters: Mr. Yang Shen-sum and Mr. Lui Shou-kwan. During 1995-1999, Chan was elected as the Honorary Adviser of the Hong Kong Museum of Art (Promotion). He was the Chairman of Chun Fung Art Club in last three decade. Presently, Chan is the president of One Art Group. In 1996, by Chan’s encouragement, Chan’s student established ‘Hong Kong Geneart Society’.
Chan debuted his painting during “South China Young Artist Exhibition” in 1956; while “Seven Man Show” in 1962 was his first exhibition in Hong Kong. Later, he joined the Contemporary Hong Kong Art Biennial Exhibition presented by the Hong Kong Urban Council in the seventies. Some of his works were selected to join in “The Chinese Art Exhibition”in China. Since 1956, his works have been exhibited in Hong Kong Museum of Art, Fung Ping Shan Museum of Hong Kong University, Museums and Galleries in China, National Historical Museum of Taiwan, The Metropolitan Art Museum and Ueno Royal Museum of Tokyo, University of Rockford, University of Cincinnati, University of British Columbia in Canada as well as the Cities of Beijing, Seoul, London, Kuala Lumpur, Toronto, Guangzhou, Shaoxing, and Harbin. He has participated in all the exhibitions of Chung Fung Art Club and One Art Group, and also joined the “Exhibition for Handover Hong Kong in 1997” & the “Exhibition for Handover Macau Celebrating the new Millennium”. He had also held four solo exhibitions in the past years.
His works can be found in the permanent collection of Hong Kong Museum of Art, University of Nan Yang (Singapore), National Museum of Singapore, Bank of America, The Committee of the Chinese Political Party (Guangdong Branch) and numerous private collections.
He started teaching from the sixties in his studio. He later established the Institute of Art Studies in 1992. He also held various teaching post in the First Institute of Art and Design, Hong Kong Chingying Institute of Visual Art, School of Continuing Studies (The Chinese University of Hong Kong), since the early seventies.
His works were published in 1989 and 1992.
